Uncanny Tales Nov 1939

Uncanny Tales Nov 1939 Red Circle Magazines (Manvis/Martin Goodman). Cover art by JW Scott (who painted all five Uncanny Tales covers). This is the third pulp in the series.

November 1939 also saw the second printing of Marvel Comics no.1 (800,000 print run), which used the same logotype as Uncanny.

The Red Circle logo is in the lower left. Goodman would reuse the logo concept to brand his comics as “Marvel Comics” in the late 40s, more than a decade before unveiling the name again on the cover of the Fantastic Four.

I love the creepy aliens on the cover. Great use of shading and colors. The woman’s pose and terror-stricken face look so realistic. “Satan is My Lover”, “Dance with My Bride and Die!” and “Pawn of Hideous Desire” grace the lurid cover. If you notice, the white lettered story callouts aren’t square with the title.
