Four Color Fear

Four Color Fear: Forgotten Horror Comics of the 1950s, Fantagraphics Books, Third Editon 2017. Cover design by Tony Ong. The image is originally from “The Corpse That Came to Dinner” originally printed in Out of the Shadows no.9, July 1953 with art by Reed Crandall.

This book sold out for both earlier printings. This highly regarded softcover collection of 50s horror comics and covers is well-researched with notes on each story, with 39 scanned and cleaned full comic stories in a 320 page softcover.

The best aspect: a full index of all pre-code horror comics.

What started with the very first full issue of horror (Eerie no.1) and the first regularly published horror comic (Adventures into the Unknown by ACG) and then Atlas and EC, has stories from ACG but unfortunately, rights issues cause two of the bigger names in horror to be omitted from this book. Still, there are plenty of great stories in here.
